Thank You For The Bread (fasting day 3)

So there is a story about my wife when she was little.  They were at a family Thanksgiving dinner and she was asked to give thanks for the food.  When she refused, her mom asked why and Keri said that there wasn't any food on the table that she liked.  Her mom said, "surely there is something on this table that you can thank God for." So Keri prayed, "God, I thank you for the bread."

Although she was being a stinker, little did she know, she couldn't have chosen a better thing to thank God for.  Isaiah 55:2 says, "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food."

As you may remember from Sunday's sermon, I shared about a moment I had with God in prayer.  I felt like He warned me (and us) to not treat Him like a restaurant where we pick and choose what we do and do not want.  We don't get to say, "God, I'll take a #4 without pickles."  And as God was sharing this with me, I immediately heard Him say, "I offer bread."  He was so clearly sharing that we are to hunger for His heavenly bread.  So often we're looking for all these other things that we think we need, but God's bread is truly all we need.

During this fast, we are rejecting every desire and craving that is not Him.  We are saying, "God, I'm hungry for your bread! I'm desperate!  I cannot live without it! Give me more of yourself, Lord.  I don't care if it's uncomfortable or inconvenient or even painful.  I only want more of you. And may you have all of me."

So with that heart, let's continue fixing our eyes on Him and Him alone.  What does He have to say?  Give Him access to your thoughts and motives.  Give Him your "Yes" in advance.  No matter what He desires of you, give it all to Him.  Because He wants to give you the only thing that will really satisfy you.

"Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food."

God, I thank you for the bread.
